Culture
Whistler has a very strong aboriginal culture and is home to the Squamish and Lil'wat people who were some of the first people to settle in Whistler (Destination BC Corp, 2016 ). The people within these cultures participate in traditional drumming, dancing and artwork (Destination BC Corp, 2016 ). Their culture has been a part of Whistler since the beginning (Destination BC Corp, 2016 ). As a result, they believe it is their responsibility to take care of the plants and animals that inhabit the area so the village and land will remain the way it was intended to be (Destination BC Corp, 2016 ).
The Squamish and Lil’wat Nations have recently opened a culture centre where they showcase artwork, share their traditions and the traditional meals they eat (Destination BC Corp, 2016 ). The Squamish Lil'Wat Cultural Centre is a great place for both people visiting Whistler and those living within the village to learn more about the culture and history of the town and its First Nations roots (Destination BC Corp, 2016 ).
Urban Land Use
The whistler village consists of many ski resorts, hotels, restaurants, stores and residential areas. Most of the mountainous areas in Whistler have had ski, mountian bike, hiking and snowboarding trails made into them. Gondolas make it easy for people to enjoy these activities. Various mountian planning and enviromental teams work together within Whistler to try to keep the village and mountians in their original ways (Whistler Blackcomb, 2016). Maintaining and sustaining the beauty, culture and landscape of Whistler, is extremely important to its residents (Whistler Blackcomb, 2016).
